Connections
Illustrated at right are connections of Auto Guider Port . And, below, connection of DslrStar to the camera, telescope and guider camera.
Auto Guider Port / Auto Guider Cable (A614): The autoguiding function provides a hardware port that interfaces to the telescope's autoguider port. A separate autoguiding camera (Meade DSI or webcam, etc.) and software are required; the DSLR camera cannot be used as an auto guider, and the DslrStar is not an auto guider. Separate ASCOM pulseguide compatible software such as GuideDog or MaxDslr, is required to run the auto guider camera. A DslrStar ASCOM driver is available. Auto Guider Cable is ST-4 standard.
External Temperature Sensor (A615): The external temperature sensor overrides the internal temperature sensor of the DslrStar, and allows the user to put it near the camera for more accurate temperature readings. The DslrStar temperature sensor port could also be used for a temperature sensor installed inside the camera (internal temperature sensor adjacent to the CCD is available as an option on Hutech spectrum-enhanced cameras).
Darks, Flats & Bias Frames: WIth the DSLR camera connected to the telescope, Dark or Bias Frame exposures require the scope to be covered; for Flats, aim at a white screen or at the sky at dusk or dawn.
DslrStar Power Requirements: The DslrStar power voltage range is 9 to 15 VDC at 500mA max. A604 (US 120VAC) or A604P-E (Euro plug 230 VAC) is provided; optional A605 (interchangeable 90-264 VAC with 4 changeable international plugs available).
Bulb Cables/IR Emitter: For Canon cameras, the DslrStar interfaces to the camera's bulb connector The A611 (for Canon 10D,20D, 20Da) basic cable is a generic N3 to DslrStar-compatible stereo plug. The A610 premium cable is a Canon N3 to DslrStar-compatible stereo plug. The A612 basic cable is used for Canon 300D or 350D, and is used and provided with A610, A611 & A613. The A613 IR Emitter is necessary for use with Nikon D50, D70, and D70s cameras.
The DslrStar can only take exposures of one second or more via the BULB control (and therefore the Remote Sequences feature). This is a limitation of the BULB input of the Canon camera. Short exposures can be taken with the DslrStar by setting the camera Tv setting, and entering 0 seconds as exposure time in DslrStar sequences.
Computer Control: For computer control, the DslrStar uses a USB cable to connect the DslrStar to the computer. And the computer is also connected to the camera via the camera's USB port.
